Hyphema

  • History of blunt or penetrating trauma
  • Blurry vision
  • PE will show decreased visual acuity and blood in anterior chamber
  • Treatment is with eye protection, limitation of activity, and head elevation of 30–45 degrees

Sample Question:

A 13-year-old boy is brought to the urgent care clinic by his mother. He was struck in the eye with a baseball while playing with classmates during recess. He complains of blurred vision and excruciating eye pain. Examination of the eye reveals decreased visual acuity, miosis, photophobia, and grossly visible blood in the anterior chamber.
