Numerous patient handoffs among this multitude of clinicians with various backgrounds and training can create various challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a short hospital stay, a patient may interact with dozens of different hospital employees. <strong>As a physician, successfully navigating these challenges will help you build patient rapport <\/strong>as well as <strong>enhance your workflow, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your staff and colleagues deserve a similar level of respect. Especially for those working in healthcare during the pandemic. When you encounter a difficult interaction, keep in mind that the other party may be having a bad day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/blog\/advice-to-prevent-physician-burnout-from-a-doctor-who-experienced-it-twice\/\">dealing with feelings of stress or burnout<\/a>, which has risen dramatically for healthcare workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Approach your colleagues with understanding and empathy as much as possible.<\/strong> In particular, try the following tips when communicating with those on your medical team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicating with Medical Students&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many residencies are a smart part of a larger academic institution. If you work at such a program, you will likely experience a month or more with rotating medical students. This provides a wonderful opportunity to <strong>teach and display your skills as a role model.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I often find that you learn best from those closest to you in age and training. Whether it\u2019s the relatability, similar ages, or styles of teaching, I learned the most from my residents. Use these tips to teach a thing or two to any students who are fortunate enough to rotate with you!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Introductions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn and use students\u2019 <strong>names<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/blog\/inclusive-language-for-medical-education-and-qbanks-an-evolving-guide\/\">inclusive language<\/a> and ask for your students&#8217; <strong>pronouns<\/strong>! Some students may not go by \u201che\u201d or \u201cshe\u201d pronouns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Teaching<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set clear <strong>expectations<\/strong> from the start for rounding on patients, writing notes, inputting orders, presenting to the team, and establishing hours and workdays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the student what their <strong>goals<\/strong> are for the rotation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>objective<\/strong> <strong>standards<\/strong> and course objectives or AAMC guidelines for medical students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recall that each student is <strong>different in knowledge and training. <\/strong>Not everyone who rotates with you is an MS3 and not every MS3 has the same level of clinical knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember teaching can be as <strong>simple<\/strong> as thinking out loud as you make a medical decision or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/blog\/the-key-to-teaching-learning-procedures-as-a-resident\/\">talking through the steps as you do a procedure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Feedback<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give timely <strong>feedback<\/strong> when appropriate, often at the end of a week in a 4-week rotation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do so in a <strong>confidential<\/strong> and <strong>professional<\/strong> manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure feedback is <strong>actionable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow time for <strong>clarification<\/strong> and\/or questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicating with Nurses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Communication between nurses and physicians is essential for the successful outcome of individualized care for each patient. <strong>To achieve this, nurses and physicians should understand and recognize that patient care is a shared duty.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physicians should remember these best practices when communicating with the nursing staff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The Basics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Introduce yourself.<\/strong> Residents and nurses rotate all the time. Do not assume they know who you are and what team you\u2019re from.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not make <strong>assumptions<\/strong> about someone&#8217;s clinical role based on their appearance or gender.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show respect by <strong>thanking<\/strong> your nurses. People like to feel appreciated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acknowledge<\/strong> and <strong>apologize<\/strong> for mistakes such as a late discharge order or forgetting to sign a patient consent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Keeping Them in the Loop<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurses interact the most with your patients, which makes it absolutely critical to keep them in the loop. More specifically, you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep them posted<\/strong> on the plan. If the patient goes for a CT or MRI scan or has hemodialysis later in the afternoon, the nursing staff should know about it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is a two-way street, often you may find yourself looking for the patient while they are gone for HD or imaging. <strong>Ask the nurses<\/strong>, as they will know your patient\u2019s whereabouts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respond promptly<\/strong> and appropriately if the nurse brings up a concern&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you feel you are getting inappropriate pushback, avoid getting into an argument. Talk in-person and try to <strong>understand their point of view<\/strong> as well as the patient&#8217;s.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid disagreeing with or criticizing a nurse in front of a patient or your team.&nbsp;If you disagree, pull the nurse aside at a later time. Any<strong> feedback should be given privately.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Improving Workflow<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose the <strong>appropriate moment<\/strong> for nursing requests. For example, don&#8217;t interrupt the nurse to ask for routine blood work in the middle of her vitals check.&nbsp;If the issue is urgent, briefly explain the emergency and make your request.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Again, be <strong>respectful<\/strong> and <strong>courteous<\/strong>. Say please and thank you!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect goes both ways. Avoid frustrating pages by letting your nurses know if you anticipate being unavailable for a period of time\u2014for example, if you have a planned procedure or meeting with a patient\u2019s family.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay attention to the way your <strong>orders<\/strong> are written. Pages that may seem unnecessary and irritating can often be avoided by adding specific parameters to your orders.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicating with Pharmacists&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pharmacists are an excellent resource for any information regarding medications, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They <strong>know the ins and outs<\/strong> of medications, including dosages, contraindications, adverse reactions or interactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They can help catch and <strong>prevent dangerous medication errors.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When interacting with them, be sure to use the previous best practices we shared\u2014such as not making assumptions, showing respect, and responding promptly. <strong>Though you probably won\u2019t be in contact with pharmacists as much as other team members, expect to hear from them and reach out with any questions.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicating with Social Workers and Case Managers&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These workers are often understaffed and cover multiple teams at a time, making for a tough job. Be mindful to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Appreciate<\/strong> what they do and reach out for collateral, discharges, or insurance assistance on your patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remain <strong>calm<\/strong> and <strong>cordial<\/strong> when delayed discharges occur.
