In these moments, I can&#8217;t help but remember everything I was taught regarding empathy in medicine. &#8220;Put yourself in your patient\u2019s position,\u201d I hear the mentors telling me from my medical school classes a decade ago.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-this-post-you-ll-find-my-experience-with-a-patient-named-barry-who-is-a-reminder-of-how-powerful-it-is-to-practice-empathy-when-interacting-with-patients-as-well-as-the-important-roles-of-empathy-in-medicine\">In this post, you&#8217;ll find my experience with a patient named Barry, who is a reminder of how powerful it is to practice empathy when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/blog\/tips-for-communicating-with-patients-during-residency\/\">interacting with patients<\/a>, as well as the important roles of empathy in medicine.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-barry-s-story\">Barry&#8217;s Story<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Wednesday\u2026the most regular of days. I see my first three patients of the day. They are healthy and no one seems too stressed. A young woman needs her gallbladder out. A middle-aged woman is looking to get rid of her varicose veins. An older gentleman needs his prostate out\u2014all run-of-the-mill stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then, I\u2019m assigned a fourth patient. <strong>Barry is an inpatient who has been here for 13 days. <\/strong>He needs a below-the-knee amputation, his sixth surgery in the last two months. <strong>He greets me with a smile and good spirits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of a sudden, my problems don\u2019t seem to matter anymore. My fountain pen is leaking and my credentialing paperwork is taking forever to get processed. <em>Oh, boo-hoo.<\/em> <em>This man is living at the hospital, about to lose his leg, and he finds a way to be chipper.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I think about what he\u2019s going through.<\/strong> The pre-op staff knows him by name because he keeps coming down for repeated leg surgeries. He\u2019s too unhealthy to be living at home, so he is living at the hospital and being told, <em>\u201cYou can\u2019t eat anything today, again,\u201d<\/em> when there wasn\u2019t&nbsp;much else to look forward to in the day other than some tepid, sweaty hospital food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>To this day, Barry serves as an example for me of just how important empathy is when it comes to the practice of medicine. <strong>We always need to be asking ourselves what our patients are thinking, what are they going through, and why does it matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-role-of-empathy-in-medicine\">The Role of Empathy in Medicine<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-role-1-empathy-can-console-and-reassure-the-patient\">Role #1: Empathy can console and reassure the patient.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Barry was remarkable because, despite everything, he was so upbeat. Of course, not every patient is like that\u2014I remember Jim, a&nbsp;56-year-old father of two who had a newly identified brain mass. His kids and wife were at the hospital&nbsp;with him, and you could see the uneasiness in everyone\u2019s eyes. What started with dropping a pen from his hand quickly revealed a brain tumor that was possibly&nbsp;cancerous, and potentially facing his own mortality in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWill I survive today? What happens after this? Will I be around next year? Who\u2019s going to raise my children?\u201d <\/em>His eyes seemed to ask me these questions, <strong>and I gave him my full attention, despite having three other patients in the OR.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt like nothing I said could possibly ameliorate the situation. But I had to say something\u2014I\u2019d be remiss to totally ignore the gravity of his situation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ended up saying,<em> \u201cI\u2019m sorry to meet you under these circumstances, Jim, but we are going to get you through today comfortably and safely.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It felt like a banal statement, but I hope that it <strong>offered some condolence or reassurance that our medical team was there to help him.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-role-2-empathy-can-be-a-source-of-motivation-nbsp\">Role #2: Empathy can be a source of motivation.&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some days, the work\u00a0makes us feel like technicians. Pre-op a patient, put in an IV, intubate a patient, see the next patient, take\u00a0a break, check on a post-op patient, etc. It can feel impersonal, like we\u2019re cogs in a wheel. I dare say that no physician is entirely immune to feeling this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way for me to motivate myself and overcome those feelings&nbsp;is to put myself in my patient\u2019s shoes, and <strong>realize that no matter how \u201crough\u201d my day is, <em>theirs is certainly worse than mine. <\/em><\/strong>From there, I feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/blog\/the-greatest-mindset-shift-you-can-make-motivation-for-doctors\/\">empowered to finish the job<\/a>, and in&nbsp;a position to help. I\u2019m well, they are not, and it\u2019s my duty to use&nbsp;my good&nbsp;health to get them back into theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-role-3-empathy-can-improve-the-experience-of-everyone-involved\">Role #3: Empathy can improve the experience of everyone involved.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you assume a patient\u2019s&nbsp;point of view, many other things become clear. <strong>To reach the upper echelons of empathy, don\u2019t just think about your patient, but also&nbsp;their family<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Jones isn\u2019t merely a patient with COPD and heart failure. He\u2019s Mrs. Jones\u2019 husband of 44 years. How does Mrs. Jones feel? She could be thinking: <em>\u201cAnother night in the ED\u2026how many more times will this happen? How unwell is he? Is he closer to death? I\u2019m not sure I can keep doing this. Caring for him on my own has been difficult. How will we pay for this?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-note-for-new-physicians\">A Note for New Physicians<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For the freshly minted physician, it can be tough to devote mind space to the softer side of medicine. You are still learning the ropes, working through differential diagnoses, and assimilating yourself into a new system and a new role. <strong>Do what you can during those early stages to open your heart, as well as your mind, to see things from your patient\u2019s perspective<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As your acumen grows, and the orders and diagnoses become more rote, dig down to find ways to make your patient feel humanized and dignified. Anything you can do to empower your patients and their families will improve their experience. Anyone in the hospital can afford to have their experience improved. As their doctor, it is up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, don\u2019t put empathy on the back burner while you focus on the \u201chard areas\u201d of medicine.
