Is your Maintenance of Certification (MOC) part 3 requirement for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) coming up? Are you dreading the thought of studying and sitting for a proctored exam? If so, you\u2019re in luck! Now there\u2019s another option, known as the Maintenance of Certification Assessment for Pediatrics (MOCA-Peds). <\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n
In this post, we\u2019ll cover everything you need to know about MOCA-Peds, so you can decide if this board recertification alternative is right for you.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

What is MOCA-Peds?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

MOCA-Peds is a web-based, self-paced, open-resource alternative to the proctored board recertification exam.<\/strong> It was piloted in 2017 with positive reviews and officially introduced in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of taking the proctored recertification exam every 5-10 years, pediatricians can complete MOCA-Peds questions quarterly over the course of five years.<\/strong> There are up to 20 questions per quarter, and you\u2019re allowed five minutes per question. And as of fall 2024, you now also have a bonus five minutes to use as you wish over the course of each quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your questions must be completed individually without seeking help from (or providing help to) other test-takers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I register?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Login to your ABP portfolio and select MOCA-Peds under the Maintenance of Certification section.<\/strong> If you\u2019re eligible, this link will take you to the MOCA-Peds dashboard where you can start answering questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ABP also sends email reminders when new questions are available, and when your quarterly deadline is approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is it scored? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Scoring is scaled and based on the same 300 points that are used for the proctored recertification exam. A passing score is 180.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s estimated that about 75% of your answers should be correct to achieve a passing score, but each January, you\u2019ll receive a report with your score for the previous year and a cumulative score from the five-year cycle. The four lowest-scoring quarters will be dropped from your final score.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if I don\u2019t pass?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have a passing score after four years of MOCA-Peds, you\u2019ll need to sit for the recertification exam in your fifth year of the cycle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on the exam?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The content is based on learning objectives and reading selections identified yearly by the ABP. These are published on the ABP website in August prior to the start of the cycle. You can view the 2026 learning objectives here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have three months to complete each question bank.<\/strong> Answer one question at a time, or complete each quarter\u2019s question bank in one sitting. Do them at home, at work, or on your phone while on the go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instant results! <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll receive the answer to each question immediately after submitting, along with an explanation. It\u2019s a great opportunity to learn as you go along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look it up! <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

How can I prepare?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s helpful to be familiar with the general pediatrics <\/strong>learning objectives<\/strong><\/a> published by the ABP, and reading through the <\/strong>featured readings<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
