Do you already know the difference?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with the most straightforward: <strong>insure<\/strong>. Just like the word \u201cinsurance,\u201d insure means to provide or obtain insurance for. You can think about it as taking precautions before something happens (which is why you get insurance). The most straightforward use is regarding financials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>His board review book collection is so large, he wishes he could <span style=\"color: #008000;\">insure<\/span> it for $10,000. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t the most realistic example, but you get the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, let\u2019s review <strong>ensure<\/strong>, which means to make certain or sure of something\u2014to guarantee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The PA student wanted to <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span> a passing PANCE score, so she studied hard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And lastly, <strong>assure<\/strong>, which means to positively inform\u2014to give confidence to something. We typically assure people of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I <span style=\"color: #008080;\">assure<\/span> you I\u2019ll loan you my IM board review flashcards after I\u2019ve taken the exam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try out this example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is important to <span style=\"color: #008000;\">insure<\/span>\/<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span>\/<strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">assure<\/span> the patient does not have a skull fracture or an intracranial hemorrhage.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re not discussing financials\u2014we\u2019re not trying to get insurance regarding the patient\u2014so we can strike <strong>insure<\/strong> from the possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So now ensure versus assure. You might be tempted to choose <strong>assure <\/strong>because the next two words are \u201cthe patient,\u201d and when we assure, we assure people. But in this example, we\u2019re not convincing a patient that they don\u2019t have a fracture. Instead, we\u2019re making sure the patient doesn\u2019t have a skull fracture or intracranial hemorrhage. We want to be certain or sure of something, which means <strong>ensure <\/strong>is the correct word here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is important to <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span><strong> the patient does not have a skull fracture or an intracranial hemorrhage.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try out this example from fellow copyeditor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Melinda (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roshreview.com\/author\/melindacampbell\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melinda<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The doctor needs to <span style=\"color: #008000;\">insure<\/span>\/<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span> healing to <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span>\/<strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">assure<\/span> the patient they\u2019ll be fine.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the correct sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The doctor needs to <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">ensure<\/span> healing to <span style=\"color: #008080;\">assure<\/span> the patient they\u2019ll be fine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How did you do? In this example, the doctor needs to be sure (<strong>ensure<\/strong>) that healing is progressing in order to confidently tell (<strong>assure<\/strong>) the patient they\u2019ll be fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there you have it: three similar-sounding words with three different meanings.
