You Just Took Your Medical Boards… Now What?
So, you did it. You took your boards. The culmination of years of training, anxiety, and borderline monastic discipline. And now…nothing. No more Qbanks. No more 5 a.m. flashcards. No more waking up in a cold sweat trying to remember which cranial nerve innervates the superior oblique (it’s IV, by the way).
And yet, here you are, reading an article titled “Now What?” as if your brain doesn’t know how to exist without a checklist. That, dear reader, is not laziness or restlessness. That’s post-productivity whiplash.
Let’s be honest: looking for something to “do” right now is what your body is used to doing after years of constant hustle. But what if you could sit in this in-between space and actually enjoy it? After all, you have the rest of your life to work—maybe this is the time for you to recover instead.
A Post-Boards Decompression Plan for Residents Who Don’t Know How to Stop
1. Untether yourself to constant productivity (…for now)
Your brain has been in performance mode for months, maybe years. It’s been trained to fire dopamine at every small win: another correct answer, another practice test, another day closer to the exam. When that structure disappears, it feels wrong. You may find yourself wondering, “What should I do today?” as if rest is irresponsible.
But here’s the truth: productivity isn’t inherently virtuous. Constant “doing” can be a smokescreen for deeper discomfort. And sometimes, doing nothing is exactly what the doctor ordered (pun intended).
Try this instead: schedule a block of unstructured time. Give yourself two hours to wander, nap, doodle, people-watch…anything that deliberately has no outcome.
2. Reclaim the narrative
Think of this time as the montage in a movie where the protagonist breathes, reflects, and emerges even better than before. If you need help finding where to start:
- Create a “reverse bucket list.” Instead of making a to-do list, write down everything you’ve done to get here. (It’s probably longer than you think!)
- Rewatch a childhood favorite. Reconnect with the version of you who didn’t have a medical CV.
- Write yourself a letter from the future. Imagine yourself 10 years from now, looking back on this time. What would that version of you say?
3. Become a tourist in your own life
You don’t need to go very far to feel like you’re traveling! Here’s how to find a little pocket of “vacation” wherever you are right now:
- Design a “micro-sabbatical.” Pick a long weekend and explore your city like you just moved there. What are some things you haven’t seen before but have been right in front of you the whole time? (Bonus points if you can walk around without a medical podcast in your earbuds.)
- Do something impractical. Take a painting class, learn to juggle, or buy a $5 thrift-store puzzle and finish it. Or maybe try cooking an extravagant recipe while listening to a genre of music you usually don’t listen to?
- Consume media that has nothing to do with medicine. Watch an abstract foreign film. Visit a museum with no educational value. Read fiction for fun.
4. Reconnect with your non-medical identity
Remember that you are more than your specialty or exam score! During this time, you might want to:
- Ask people not to ask about the exam. Seriously. All it takes is a simple, “Let’s talk about literally anything else.”
- Host a dinner party. Dress up. Cook something from scratch. Make a themed playlist. Have non-medical conversations about the life you’ve built outside of residency.
- Reach out to old friends. Inevitably, you may have let a few relationships fall to the wayside during the last few years of residency. Try reaching out to a few of them—you might be surprised at how happy they are to hear from you!
5. Prepare for your exam results (without obsessing over them!)
The results will come. You don’t control when or how, but you do control how you respond to the stress in the meantime:
- Set a “worry appointment.” Once a week, give yourself 15 minutes to catastrophize. The rest of the time? Off-limits.
- Plan a results-day ritual. Think beyond “refreshing the portal.” Plan out your day (and stick to it) so you’ll have something to look forward to, no matter what the result is.
You’ve Earned a Soft Landing!
This liminal space between effort and outcome is not a void to be filled. It’s a field to lie in. Stretch out and feel the sun. ☀️ From all of us at Rosh Review, we’re rooting for you!
