Everything to Know About the Advanced EM Ultrasonography Exam
As of June 1, 2021, ABEM has opened applications for the new Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Advanced EM Ultrasonography (AEMUS). This new FPD recognizes EM physicians who have comprehensive knowledge of AEMUS, beyond the basic skills.

Who is eligible for the AEMUS FPD?
Only ABEM-certified physicians.
Before applying for the AEMUS FPD Exam, physicians must fulfill one of three pathways:
- Training Pathway
- Training-Plus-Practice Pathway
- Practice-Only Pathway
But note the Training-Plus-Practice and Practice-Only Pathways will end on December 31, 2025. Learn more about all three pathways and AEMUS eligibility here.
When is the next AEMUS FPD Exam?
The second-ever exam will be March 11–16, 2024, occurring every two years (in even-numbered years) thereafter.
What does the AEMUS FPD Exam cover?
The exam will be based on the Core Content of AEMUS:
- Physics and Technical Aspects of Ultrasonography
- Anatomic/Diagnostic Ultrasound
- Procedural Ultrasound
- Clinical Ultrasonography Training with Non-Emergency Medicine Specialties
- Education and Research Skills
- Administration and Quality
What is the AEMUS FPD Exam format?
Exam questions are multiple-choice. Check the ABEM site for more details as they become available.
When will my AEMUS FPD expire?
After you pass the exam, your FPD will expire five years later, on December 31st of that year.
Say you receive your passing results on June 1, 2024. Your expiration date will be December 31, 2029.
